TITLE:  The Spice King (Hope and Glory, Book One)
AUTHOR:  Elizabeth Camden
DATE:  2019
PUBLISHER: Bethany House Publishers
STARS: *****

Gray Delacroix has dedicated his life to building a successful global spice empire, but it has come at a cost. Tasked with gaining access to the private Delacroix plant collection, Smithsonian botanist Annabelle Larkin unwittingly steps into a web of dangerous political intrigue and will be forced to choose between her heart and her loyalty to her country.

While I normally read contemporary and suspense novels almost exclusively, authors like Elizabeth Camden are tempting me to change my preference to Christian historical novels. The Spice King lured me with an irresistible heroine, handsome but hurting hero, and an array of tantalizing tidbits of new-to-me information. I do love learning as I read and truly appreciate thorough research like the fascinating info on the origin and growth of the spice industry. Added elements of subterfuge, rivalry, and even espionage added to the story and my enjoyment.

The Spice King is the first of a new series, and I eagerly await the next installment. Until then, I recommend The Spice King and award it five stars. Book has been provided courtesy of Baker Publishing Group and Graf-Martin Communications, Inc.

Book Review: Pine Mountain Secrets

TITLE:  Pine Mountain Secrets
AUTHOR:  Emily Josephone
DATE:  2019
STARS: *****

What if the one secret you were holding was the one thing holding you back from a life of complete freedom?

Arianna, a sixteen-year-old from Uganda, is on the run. Who and what she is running from, she doesn't want to tell. She's learned, over the past eight years, not to trust Americans. But when an injury forces her onto the mercy of Allison Whitlock, who finds Arianna in her shed one cold, southeast Oklahoma winter morning, she begins to see that some people are worth her trust.

Until Allie's best friend comes along, pushing Arianna to make a decision that could not only destroy her only hope at freedom, but that could take her life.

Allie has her own secret, a secret that is slowly eating away at her conscience. What the authorities believe about the car accident that killed her husband and one of her sons five years ago may not be the complete truth. But the one person who knows the truth, her older son Jared, ran away four and a half years ago and has not been heard from since.

The secret begins to burn even hotter when Jeb Mitchell, the man accused of causing the accident, returns from his time in prison and shows up at Allie's door. Allie wants to make things right with her neighbor and former friend, whose wife was also killed in the accident. But she doesn't believe it's her place, since she wasn't at the scene. And so, the secret continues taking its toll.

A girl and a woman, each holding tightly to a secret that binds them. Forgiveness and trust are the first steps toward freedom, but they need a miracle to push them all the way.

I read a lot and often accept free books when offered. Some are worth the price, others I close with a satisfied sigh. Pine Mountain Secrets is one that soared—straight to my soul. The plot is explained well in the blurb (above), so I won’t repeat it. But Arianna and Allie won my heart from the beginning, each holding onto secrets that kept them bound, solitary in their shadowy fears.

The author skillfully inserted hints of the truth through the story, like doors opened one per day on an Advent calendar. Some I guessed as the story progressed, but deeper ones shocked me. As the truth became clear, my heart broke. Because while Pine Mountain Secrets is fiction, its basis is real. Horribly real. Isaiah 58:6-7 has been tugging on my soul lately; perhaps that’s why this story affected me so deeply.

I challenge every Christian to read this story and consider what the truth requires. Pine Mountain Secrets will remain in my mind and heart for a long time; it easily earns five stars. Highly recommended!

I’ve always loved music, even before the writing bug hit. Grace notes are little extras, not the actual melody. Just something that adds to the feel of the music. My desire for this blog is to encourage and bless readers, to share a little grace.
