Until this week.
I’ve been reading Paul’s letter to the Romans and have loved Romans 15:13 for years, using it as my tagline when signing books. But before I got to that familiar blessing, verse five leapt straight into my heart.
“May the God who gives endurance and encouragement give you the same attitude of mind toward each other that Christ Jesus had.” (Romans 15:5)
Wow! Now that resonated loudly, for three reasons.
First, the source of endurance and encouragement: God Almighty.
Endurance is something I’ve strived for without success as health issues drag me down. According to this verse, it’s no wonder my efforts fail. God is the One who gives endurance, sufficient for me to do what He wants me to do. Not more and not less, but enough. Praise His name!
Encouragement also comes from God through His word and through His children. I have experienced this time after time, giving hope when all hope fails. We all need encouragment, don’t we?
When I’m exhausted, I can seek help from my Father. When I see others struggling, He gives me encouragement to share, the attitude of Jesus Christ, Who gave His life for us.
What an amazing promise and challenge: internal and external offerings of grace. Thank You, Lord!
