TITLE:  A Matter of Heart

AUTHOR:  Tracie Peterson

DATE:  2014

PUBLISHER:  Bethany House

STARS:  ****

Texas born and raised Jessica Atherton is a wealthy young woman whose heart was broken when the man she intended to marry wedded another. But her world is upended when two new men come into her life, and both manage to stir her heart.

Harrison Gable is a successful young lawyer with ambitions that match Jessica's dreams. His warm, attentive manner and thoughtful gifts make her feel special.

Austin Todd, a former Secret Service agent, enjoys working now as a Texas Ranger cattle inspector. But after learning of forged gold certificates and missing printing plates, he's drawn back into the world of intrigue and agrees to help solve the case. Jessica is drawn to his kind nature and the unspoken pain she sees in his eyes.

If Jessica follows her heart, where will it lead?

This is the third book in Tracie Peterson’s Lone Star Brides series, and after reading A Moment in Time (Book2), I was eager to catch up with Alice, Marty, and their families. Unlike that book, though, A Matter of Heart did not capture my attention the way the other book had. Jessica is a spoiled, self-centered young lady, and while her efforts to change are admirable, it felt stilted to me, with more telling than showing.

Once I got into the story, I found it charming and more what I’d hoped for. Austin Todd is a damaged hero, my favorite kind, and his story was easily my favorite part of the book. All in all, A Matter of Heart earns four stars from me.

Bethany House offered me a book in exchange for my honest opinion.

TITLE:  A Promise to Protect

AUTHOR:  Patricia Bradley

DATE:  October 2014

PUBLISHER:  Revell

STARS:  *****

Acting Sheriff Ben Logan hasn't heard from Leigh Somerall in a very long time, but it doesn't mean he can get her--or their whirlwind romance of ten years ago--out of his head. When she calls out of the blue, it is with a strange request to protect her brother, Tony. When Tony dies just days later, Ben is charged with a different task--protecting Leigh and her nine-year-old son, TJ, from the killers. But how can Ben keep an eye on Leigh if she's doing everything in her power to avoid him? And could the secret that Leigh is keeping change Ben's life forever?

Suspense, intrigue, and a touch of romance make A Promise to Protect perfect for readers who like their stories with a hearty dose of mystery.

Sometimes an opening sentence will grab me. This one certainly does: “Tony Jackson shouldn’t be dying in a ritzy hotel room in downtown Memphis on a hot July night.” Wow! No gentle increase in tension here. Patricia Bradley’s A Promise to Protect starts strong and keeps the tension high right through to the satisfying end.

Mysterious assailants, secrets from the past, and an irresistible young boy combine in a story that holds tight and keeps the blood pressure raised. Patricia Bradley is now one of my favorite authors, and A Promise to Protect earns five stars from me. I was given a free copy of this book by the publisher in exchange for this honest opinion.

I’ve always loved music, even before the writing bug hit. Grace notes are little extras, not the actual melody. Just something that adds to the feel of the music. My desire for this blog is to encourage and bless readers, to share a little grace.
