![]() Yes, this is a week early, but hubby and I will be travelling next Monday. Therefore, it is with great pleasure that I introduce our next Monday Spotlight guest, Claire Sanders and her inspiring historical novel, A Thousand Little Blessings. After many years of writing and publishing in the nonfiction world of academia, Claire turned her energy, humor and creativity towards the production of compelling romantic fiction. Claire writes captivating stories that fit the genres of contemporary, historical, and inspirational romance. Claire creates heroes any woman would want to be with and heroines who overcome all obstacles to find love. Written with wit and tenderness, her stories engage the readers’ hearts and imaginations. Readers will find themselves anxiously turning the pages to find out what happens next. Claire lives in the greater Houston area with her daughter and one well-loved dog. When she isn’t writing, you’ll find her cooking, gardening, and dreaming of places to travel. Fascinating! Please tell us more about yourself, Claire. I have just a few questions for you, and I can't wait to hear your responses. 1. What was your inspiration for this story? As Christians, we're taught to forgive those who hurt us. But I've often struggled with the idea of how did one forgive oneself. The theme of this story is learning to forgive yourself for mistakes. 2. What is its take-away message? I hope the readers will find "A Thousand Little Blessings" a thoughtful story with a message about forgiveness. 3. Tell us a bit about your writing routine. Do you have set hours? Do you get dressed first? Do you travel for research? Where and when do you do your best work? I write whenever I can find the time. I sometimes travel for research but most of my research is done through the internet and the local library. 4. What’s your next writing project? My work-in-progress is a romance set in 1910. The working title is "The Baseball Bride". It's about a girl who learned to play baseball alongside her four brothers. When the town team needs her, will she break the rules and play in the most important game of the season? Just for fun: 1. Coffee or Tea? Tea, please. 2. Snacks: Sweet or Salty? I like all things sweet! 3. Dream vacation A year in the U.K. would be quite nice. 4. #1 on your Bucket List. Actually, the only thing I really wanted to do before I died was to have a child. My daughter is now 20 years old. Thank you! Take note, dear readers: Ms. Sanders has graciously offered the choice of an e-copy or print copy of A Thousand Little Blessings to one lucky commenter. So don’t forget to leave a comment below for your chance to win! ![]() Want to know more about this book? I read it, and this is what I found: A lovely, young woman, accustomed to living in her father’s shadow and a wounded warrior, seeking forgiveness are brought together by fate in a small town in the Texas Hill Country... Henrietta Davis wants to please her father. It’s no secret Henry Davis had hoped for a son who would one day assume his position as president of Davis Bank and Trust, so after graduating from college, Etta returns to her home in Burnet, Texas to work as her father’s unpaid assistant. But try as she might, she cannot live up to her father’s expectations. It’s 1919, and a woman can’t become president of a bank. But then tragedy befalls. Uncertain and grief-stricken, Henrietta Davis must find the courage to take over her father’s position as bank president and find the embezzler who is slowly ruining her family’s business and good name. Lieutenant Gabriel Benson returns to his hometown after fighting in France. Besieged by memories of the battlefield and unable to adjust to the quiet life of Burnet, Texas, he wonders if he will ever be able to forgive himself for leading his men to their deaths. Gabriel and Etta have no one to confide in except each other, and as their friendship grows, so does their love for each other. But their love won’t survive unless each conquers the demons that threaten to keep them apart. This story touched me deeply, especially since I identified with Henrietta (Etta) in her grief and distress. Her father’s stroke echoed what happened very recently in my own family, making that part of the story an emotional journey for me. Ms. Sanders expressed young Etta’s sorrow vividly, as well as portraying her strength of resolve and her faith. Etta is a worthy heroine. Gabriel’s wartime trauma continues to haunt him in what we now know as Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome. Of course, in the early 1900’s there were no resources for returning soldiers. But Gabriel finds solace in Etta’s beautiful faith, and she yearns to help him as he encourages her. This is a wonderful story of love and faith that overcomes all kinds of trauma. I thoroughly enjoyed A Thousand Little Blessings for its message and for the pleasure of visiting a time unfamiliar to me. It easily earns four stars. Ready to get your own copy? Merry Christmas to you all, my dear readers, and to you, Claire Sanders, for visiting us and bringing your fine novel, A Thousand Little Blessings. ![]() TITLE: Daydreams (The Lewis Legacy Series Book 4) AUTHOR: JoAnn Durgin DATE: 2012 STARS: ****1/2 It's early December 2002, and Amy Jacobsen is living the dream: a job she loves with a trendy New York City magazine, a Manhattan walk-up inherited from her grandfather, and a busy social life without the unwanted complication of a steady boyfriend. During dinner one evening with her Wall Street financier brother, Mitch, she spies Landon Warnick at the next table. He's one of the most influential, successful and youngest magazine publishers in the country and one of New York's most eligible bachelors. After Mitch wrangles a meeting between the two, Landon wastes little time asking her to dinner. Usually wary of smooth men and romantic entanglements, Amy questions her sanity when they share a cozy carriage ride in Central Park and she comes *this* close to kissing him. Is it the joy and wonder of the Christmas season that's put stars in her eyes or the enigmatic, intelligent, challenging and incredibly handsome man? The following weekend, she travels to Louisiana to be a bridesmaid in a wedding and a reunion with Sam and Lexa Lewis and some of her dearest friends and fellow volunteers in TeamWork Missions. Headed down the aisle at the wedding, Amy's steps falter. Standing at the front is a groomsman who flew into town only an hour before, and she does a double take. What's Landon Warnick doing in her world, with her friends? Perhaps more importantly, why does he suddenly have a Texas drawl and a crescent-shaped scar on his forehead? Sharing a romantic dance at the wedding reception, she casts aside her better judgment and kisses him. She's lost her mind, and her heart might not be far behind, it seems. Let the adventure begin! Is the Lord showing her the "right" man for her heart or is Amy in way over her head? By the end of the first page of Daydreams, I found myself wondering how Ms. Durgin does it. How does she make me care so much about her characters when I’ve barely met them? Amelia (Amy) captured my imagination right away with her sassiness and sensitivity, and when Landon first entered her life, I could almost hear the swell of the string section. This was going to be interesting. I especially appreciated Amy’s daring rescue of Tam, whom she’d barely met. The faith message in this story shone brightly and clearly, a very good thing, in my estimation. The romance had some interesting twists, and I loved “meeting” the rest of the TeamWork gang again. I was given an e-copy of this book with the understanding that I would give it my honest review, and Daydreams earns four and a half stars from me. Recommended! ![]() TITLE: Wisdom Tree AUTHOR: Mary Manners DATE: 2012 PUBLISHER: White Rose Publishing STARS: **** Sometimes the last thing we think we need is exactly what God has planned. After the death of his parents, Jake Samuels has enough on his plate—including a fledgling church to lead and a mischievous younger brother to raise. The last thing he needs is a rambunctious woman to contend with. Carin O'Malley is dealing with the death of her brother and a new job as an English teacher at East Ridge Middle School where Corey Samuels reigns as King of Chaos. The last thing she needs is to fall in love with a man...especially a handsome and complicated preacher like Corey’s brother Jake. But when Corey's antics toss Carin and Jake together, the two must draw from God’s wisdom to find refuge in His perfect plan for them. From an inauspicious introduction, Jake and Carin trudge the murky waters of relationship. Jake is trying hard to be the parent his brother needs, only to find his advice and disciplinary efforts ignored. Carin feels a bond with the troubled Corey even before she discovers their similar grief. Mary Manners brings these characters to life in Wisdom Tree, and I found myself involved in their efforts to overcome the difficulties facing them, bringing them close, and pushing them apart. With a strong faith message and even a bonus devotional, Wisdom Tree is a story of redemption and hope. I received this book as a gift from the author, and it earns four stars. Recommended. ![]() This morning it is my privilege to introduce the multi-talented Sally Meadows. Sally is an author, singer/songwriter, educator, and speaker who lives in Saskatchewan, Canada. Sally is special to me because she helped me with my book signing last spring, out of the kindness of her heart. As I've gotten to know her a bit better, it became obvious that kindness is integral to her life. Her first children's book, The Two Trees, about a boy on the autism spectrum, was released April 1, 2015. She is also a contributor to Hot Apple Cider With Cinnamon (2015), 7 Essential Habits of Christian Writers (2015), the bestselling Chicken Soup for the Soul: Christmas in Canada (2014), and Organized Obstacles: An Underdog Anthology (2014). Sally's two CDs, Red & White (2013) and Turn the Page (2012) both contain songs that were shortlisted for The Word Awards, Canada's largest and most prestigious awards for those writing from a Christian perspective. Okay, now I get to ask a few questions: 1. What was your inspiration for Beneath That Star? This story is based on a song I wrote for my 2013 Christmas CD Red & White. The song itself was inspired by my reflections on the biblical passages that prophesied or documented the birth of Jesus, which I read as I prepared to write songs for my album. As I meditated on these passages, I began to think, What if there were others who saw the star the night of Jesus’s birth? And what would be their back stories? Thus was born the character of a young woman, to whom God appears in a dream and calls her to follow the star when she sees it. In-depth details of the character, who I eventually named Saray, came when I started writing the manuscript for the book. 2. What is its take-away message? There are a few! First, God really does see and care about each one of us. Second, it’s okay to seek a life/career for yourself that may be “out-of-the-box”. This is an especially important message for young women--one I followed myself--and why I dedicated the book in part to my nieces. And finally, as referenced in the concluding Scripture quoted in the book, God has something immeasurably more wonderful for us than we could ever ask or imagine; we must put our trust and faith in Him and try not to do things in our power. 3. Tell us a bit about your writing routine. Do you have set hours? Do you get dressed first? Do you travel for research? Where and when do you do your best work? I work best when I have a nice block of time at my disposal. I don’t have a set routine, but it does help to make a decision the day before that, for example, I will be dedicating that morning exclusively to writing. I do most of my writing at my kitchen table, where the sunlight streams in through the windows. I am currently working on manuscripts for two more children’s books. These both have a nature theme; both are based on my observations on the wildlife that inhabit the storm pond near my home. 4. #1 on your bucket list: To make a decent living doing the things (writing, music) I love. Tied with singing with The Tenors! (Dream big, right???) Just for fun: 1. Coffee or Tea? Neither! I have never been a coffee drinker, and I rarely drink tea any more. I’m a water girl through and through! 2. Snacks: Sweet or Salty? Both! However, since I lost almost 40 pounds, I’ve drastically cut back on salty snacks such as chips. I still have my sweet tooth, though. I have cut out chocolate because caffeine increasingly bothers me, so I indulge in white chocolate, gluten-free cookies, or frozen vanilla yoghurt bars. 3. Dream vacation I still love exploring Canada. My dream vacation would be travel in an RV from coast to coast, possibly dipping down through the US southwest of my home province, Saskatchewan. ![]() Please tell us more about Beneath That Star. Saray longs to be a shepherd like her three older brothers. But when God speaks to her in a dream to look out for and follow the bright star, what she finds underneath it is of far greater value than anything she could ever have imagined. Beneath That Star is an uplifting story for all ages about obedience, patience, trust, healing, and above all, God’s immeasurable love for each one of us. Excerpt: "As she sat there, eyes closed, she felt the light in the room slowly change. Her eyes snapped open. Light was streaming in through the window! Saray stumbled outside. There in the night sky, was the brightest light she had ever seen. The star! For one moment, Saray didn’t move. Then, heart thumping with joy, she went back inside to get her crutch and set off to follow that star." Kathleen's review: This story is set at an extraordinary time in the hill country near the tiny town of Bethlehem, in an ordinary home, featuring a slightly crippled young girl. Saray dares to dream of becoming a shepherd someday, but her injury and planned future make her dream seem impossible. So while she knows the God of her people is real, she wonders if He really cares about someone as insignificant as her. Beneath That Star is a story of hope and joy. Illustrated by Sarah E. Nickel in a simple, cartoon-like style, this book would make a wonderful gift for children and any person who enjoys a sweet, new take on the first Christmas. I was given an e-copy of this book by the author in return for my honest opinion. Beneath That Star earns four stars. Recommended. One last thing. Where can we find this and your other products? All of my books and CDs are available for purchase at http://sallymeadows.com/store. Beneath That Star is also available in select bookstores, Christian bookstores, at amazon.ca, and amazon.com. Sally’s Christmas CD Red & White is available in digital format and/or as a hard copy at http://sallymeadows.com/music, http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/sallymeadows2, amazon.com, and amazon.ca. Thanks so much, Sally! And thank you, dear readers, for visiting. We'd love to hear from you. <3 ![]() TITLE: Perchance to Dream AUTHOR: JoAnn Durgin DATE: October 2015 STARS: ***** Ellie Franklin has known Ryan Sullivan her entire life. As their Christmas wedding approaches, Ryan is expected home from his second deployment to Afghanistan. Excitement is in the air as Ellie prepares for his homecoming, and the citizens of Cade’s Corner, Ohio, anxiously await the wedding of their hometown sweethearts. When an unforeseen event occurs, will Ellie’s plans be postponed or will they come to a screeching halt? With her faith and family to sustain her, as well as the support of an entire town, will this bride’s prayers for a holiday miracle be answered? A heartwarming novel of unfailing love, family, never giving up hope, and claiming the precious promises of God. And, through it all, discovering a true Christmas miracle. Ms. Durgin is a wonderful storyteller, and in Perchance to Dream, she unwraps a tale of life-long love as told by the heroine. The first-person point of view is perfect for this story, as Ellie shares with a comatose friend—and those care home workers listening in—the story of her romance with neighbor boy/hero Ryan. It’s her way of surviving the wait for Ryan to return home from Afghanistan in time for their Christmas wedding. With sensitivity, humor, and pathos, Ms. Durgin brings Ellie and Ryan’s romance to glowing life. I loved the small-town warmth, each character introduced (even the stunned driver who hit Ryan), and the clear explanation of faith and salvation through Jesus Christ. And I especially loved the cameo appearance from TeamWork! That made me smile, like an unexpected meeting far from home. When I closed this book, I sat back and basked for a few minutes in the love glow of Ellie and Ryan’s story. I was given a copy of Perchance to Dream as a gif, and I believe this story deserves five stars. Highly recommended. |
